What is Lovingkindness?

Compassion and Radical Love

The term "lovingkindness" is most often associated with Buddhist philosophy, but lovingkindness is central to all of the world's major religions. Buddhists translate the term Metta as lovingkindness, and a version of the lovingkindness meditation, or prayer, is included below.

We must first feel grounded in self-love and compassion before we extend it to other beings.

Metta Meditation

May I be safe.

May I be free from suffering.

May I be happy and peaceful.

May my friends and family be safe.

May my friends and family be free from suffering.

My my friends and family be happy and peaceful.

May all beings be safe.

May all beings be free from suffering.

May all beings be happy and peaceful.

Hinduism

In Hindu tradition, the Sanskrit term "maitri" is often translated as compassionate love or goodwill, and is the related to "metta" in Buddhism. Bhakti (unconditional love for all creation and the divine) and atma-prema (unconditional self love) also refer to lovingkindness practice.
